· The woman on the 10 dollar note ·

That face seemed familiar to me. I stopped in the middle of the street to look at it in my hands, without knowing that this note was much more than just currency: it was a little bit of a revolution, an invitation to fight for what I believe in, a dream come true.

The city of Halifax was inviting me to read between its lines. And so, someone told me its story. That of the woman who never dreamed of anything else apart from freedom and equality. Of that film in which a seat in a cinema changed everything. That of her willpower, her bravery, of how she got a small place in the world.

I discovered that this little piece of paper was priceless. It stood for a story of achievement, a message of empowerment that does not understand races or colours. An example to follow.

Because if what surrounds you is not fair, change it. If you fall down seven times, get up eight. Because your voice can change the world.

Because that woman on the 10 dollar note is also me, it is you, it is Viola Desmond.

Because the world is for the brave.

Fight for what you believe in!
